Expanded Home Repair Workshops for OBCDC's 50th Anniversary: Interior and Exterior Home Workshops!

Over the last three years, our homeowner assistance services have evolved to provide programs that are both relevant and convenient, empowering Old Brooklyn neighbors to feel confident in the repairs they are making or planning for their homes. Our Home Repair Classes were unanimously voted as the OBCDC staff’s favorite educational services offered, helping over 60 attendees learn valuable skills that can save them thousands on home improvement projects. OBCDC staff alone have saved over $10,000 in labor costs thanks to skills acquired through these classes.

Through our partnership with the Home Repair Resource Center in Cleveland Heights, we bring in experts in carpentry, drywall repair, power tools, and plumbing to teach in Old Brooklyn. Anne-Marie and Jim from HRRC provide all necessary tools and materials, making it easy for attendees to learn and improve their handy skills. Anne-Marie and Jim are also happy to answer any questions you may have about your current and ongoing home projects. Participants are asked to wear pants, close-toed shoes, and an eager attitude for learning.

In celebration of Old Brooklyn Community Development Corporation’s 50th anniversary, we’re adding something special to our home repair education this year. We will continue to host our four-part class covering carpentry, power tools, drywall repair, and plumbing. Additionally, we’re introducing a new three-part series focused on exterior education and repairs to boost curb appeal and home value. These classes will cover topics such as proper tree care and trimming, simple landscaping techniques, and front porch carpentry and small outdoor repairs. The exterior repair classes are hands-on, concluding in an opportunity to use your new skills by assisting a neighborhood senior with painting their porch as part of our Home Repair Program.

But wait there’s more! We’ve partnered with Huntington Bank to introduce a tool initiative for both our Indoor and Outdoor Home Repair Workshops. Not only will you learn the skills needed to make repairs, but you’ll also receive a tool at each workshop that complements the specific information taught. As a bonus, attendees who complete four out of the seven classes will receive a complete tool kit, including a hammer, screwdriver with interchangeable bits, pliers, and more! The interior home repair workshops will take place at Refuge Church on Broadview Road from 7:00-9:00 pm. See the dates, topics, and registration link below. Don’t wait—sign up today, as spots will fill up quickly!

The exterior workshops will be held in May or June 2025 to capitalize on the warm weather months.
